What is Sterling Silver?
.925 Sterling Silver is made of 92.5% silver alloyed with
copper to make it stronger. Of all the metals available, silver is one of the
most reflective, giving it unmatched brilliance. This makes sterling silver
perfect for jewelry designs. Silver is relatively abundant and easy to extract
from ore. Because of this, silver is relatively affordable making it ideal for
jewelry that will appeal to a large range of consumers.
At various times in history silver was
valued even more than gold. In ancient times silver had a mystical allure to
it, often being associated with the sea, moon and lunar goddesses. At
Avalanche Sterling Silver we do our best to capture this spirit. Placing a
mark on the silver to identify it’s origin and purity is known as Hallmarking,
and can be an important part in determining the value of a collectable piece.
Because the cleaning of sterling silver can
be such a burdensome task, much of the silver used in the manufacture of
jewelry has various types of anti tarnish finishes. These finishes range from,
a flash overlay of pure silver, waxes, proprietary coatings and the popular
Rhodium plating. Rhodium is in fact a much more expensive raw material than
silver but does not have the same reflective value that silver has. Although
Rhodium is not as brilliant as Silver, it’s superior anti tarnish qualities
out weigh it’s lower reflectivity.
Our jewelry is crafted from the finest .925 sterling silver.
